The Malvasia Black grape variety
The Malvasia black vine, or simply "Malvasia N.", as reported in the National Vine Variety Register, like the other Black Berry Malvasies, belongs to that vine family whose name "Malvasia" comes from a contracted variation of Monembasia , Byzantine fortress abbarbished on the rocks of a promontory south of the Peloponnese, where sweet wines were produced and exported all over Europe by the Venetians under the name of Monemvasia. The wine made with this variety had become extremely popular, so that Venice swarmed with osterias called Malvases, consecrated to its consumption. Another document of those years is called "malvaticus", which was the black berry, produced in Cyprus and also marketed in northern Italy.
Malvasia (Malvasier) has been planted in Trentino Alto Adige for centuries and is part of the local oenological tradition. It goes back to the Alto Adige (or Südtirol) doc. We can also find it in some denominations of Tuscany.
